Job Summary

My client is seeing a qualified Stone Expert, Gemologist to work in its sourcing department. The primary purpose of this position is to ensure that the high diamond & coloured stone quality standards of my client are met by grading Melee and Certified diamonds according to the GIA methodology.

Key Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Grading, evaluating and plotting certified stones (diamonds and coloured stones) that are either under consideration for purchase or on stones that are in existing inventory/ product.
  • Grading and sorting melee diamonds according to MM size, colour, clarity requirements.
  • Ensuring the highest standards are met with regards to cut parameters and types of inclusions.
  • Inspecting diamonds in finished jewellery and loose layouts for non-quality diamonds or for damaged stones in an effort to maintain high quality standards and in order to guarantee consistency and integrity of our product.
  • Communicating with the Director and Gemstone Buyer on supplier rejection rates and reasons.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all Inventory Control requirements are being met throughout the grading/selecting and stocking processes.
  • Reviewing loose diamonds returned from the manufacturing process to ensure the departments diamond standards are still in effect.
  • Evaluating Jewellery designs/renderings by estimating the size of diamonds needed and calculating estimated costs associated with manufacturing the specific piece.
  • Assisting the Director- Gemstone Purchasing on special projects, as warranted.
  • Filling work orders, as needed, by selecting diamonds that adhere to our strict quality and matching standards.

Job Qualifications

  • G.G. degree. (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 3 years of diamond grading experience dealing with diamonds of high colour and clarities.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience grading coloured stones.
  • Proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Word.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and be amenable to changing priorities.
