STCW COURSE OVERVIEW


Yacht Steward and Stewardess: Interior crew in charge of the interior and caring for guests. Working as a stewardess can be a very rewarding experience. More than almost any other members of crews, you get to meet owners and guests. The service you provide is vital to the quality of the guests’ stay. As a steward or stewardess your duties will include everything from Silver Service to bedmaking and cleaning.

Sous Chef: Prepare and cook meals for guests and crews.

Laundry Attendant: Laundry Attendant: someone who knows how to care for any kind of clothing materials like linen, silk, rayon and other blends. They will be well-versed in stain removal and ironing settings. They will know how to properly store and pack all clothing and accessories, and are experts in the use of all types of equipment. They will be able to care for fine bed linens and table linens. They should be capable of using both domestic and commercial laundering equipment, pressing machines, and rotary irons.

Massage Therapist: You must obtain a practice license and depending on the clients’ requirement most will be providing Thai Massage, Swedish Massage, Aromatherapy Massage and sometimes just a simple Foot Massage. Due to limited space on a yacht, a Massage Therapist can also assume other roles, i.e. assisting the Sous Chef or even the Laundry Attendant.

  • Working Hours: Unfortunately working on luxury yachts are long hours. You are required to be up before the clients and retire after your clients. No overtime will be paid but your gratuities from each charter can be quite rewarding.

  • Accommodation on Board: Accommodation on board are normally very small and one cabin is commonly shared by 2 crew. Each cabin is equipped with a tv and internet access.

  • Days Off: 6 working days with one day off in a week, depending on the yacht charter schedule. If the yacht is being chartered for over a week the crew will be requested to take days off when the yacht is not occupied.
  • Paid Vacation: At least 4 weeks guaranteed in a year with one to two round trip tickets provided by the owner upon his/her discretion.

  • Medical Insurance: It is a requirement that all crew are to be covered by medical insurance provided by the yacht owner.

  • Tax Free Salary: Salaries are normally transferred into your bank account wherever you requested. Crew will be advised not to carry cash on board a yacht. Advances can normally be made by the captain and deducted from the salary.

  • Pack in soft bags that can be easily folded and stowed away for their own sake, no big hard suitcases, as space is very limited.

  • 20kgs maximum suggested, you do not need much as uniform is provided.

  • Civilian cloths for off-time and going ashore.

  • No towels and no bed-linen.

  • No domestic products like wash detergent etc, all this is supplied.

  • For the course you need some kind of comfortable exercise clothing that is not too sensitive, as well as swim wear.
  • Non-marking shoes are preferred as civilian shoes, uniform shoes are provided.

  • It is advised to bring your own toiletries.

  • No food.

  • There is a TV in each cabin and a TV set with DVD player in the mess.

  • Shades (sun-glasses).

  • Good mood, happy spirits and great weather.

The STCW 95 Basic Training is a combination of the following four safety modules, often required for anyone working aboard commercial vessels. The module includes:
  • Personal Survival Techniques.

  • Elementary First Aid.

  • Fire Fighting and Prevention.

  • Personal Safety and Social responsibility.

Below are some of the exercises involved in STCW Training:

  • Swim 50m without a lifejacket.

  • Jump from 5m height with a lifejacket, into a pool.

  • Ride an upside-down life raft.

  • All above takes place in a pool.

  • Carry a fireman's outfit including the air bottles and facemask and breath bottled air thru a mouthpiece.

  • Do some basic fire fighting i.e. extinguish real fires with real smoke!

  • Attend a medical course involving 1st aid, mouth-to-mouth demos, CPR, injections etc.

  • Oral and Written exams.
